Whenever cast irons cannot deliver enough strength, factories start to use steel casting. In most cases, we use it for products such as forging presses, frames, hydroelectric turbine wheels or marine equipment and so on. There are two types of steel casting.

Alloy steels

In this case, we alloyed steel with a variety of elements. The maximum is 50% to improve its mechanical properties. Here we also have two groups, one is high alloy steels, and the other is low-alloy steels. One of the simplest steel is iron alloyed with carbon. And we have to mention that not all the steels are “alloyed steels.” The most common ones are full of nickel, boron, vanadium, chromium and others.

Carbon steels

Here the main alloying constituent is carbon as you can conclude in its name. To determine steel as carbon steel, there shouldn’t be minimum content specified for zirconium, niobium, nickel or cobalt. Therefore, there shouldn’t be more than 1.65 of manganese or 0.60 of copper and similar. The higher percentage of carbon it is, the stronger and harder steel becomes through heat treating.

Steel vs. Iron

It is very important t know that the steel is more difficult to cast than iron. SO different procedure you should apply on these two types of metal. A lot of produces also pay attention to the thickness of the mold cavity, due to a different rate of shrinkage. According to their density, we should mention that iron is more fluid than steel. Depending on your needs we choose the type of steel we are going to use for your product.

Use of steel in automotive

In car industry factories often use these processes, due to their possibility to create stronger parts. Still, do not neglect others parts of the metal industry. Nowadays, we apply it for truck [arts, offshore safety equipment, water system valves, military casting, bridge parts, railroad parts, construction equipment and oil and gas steel casting. Its application is huge, and we couldn’t imagine a modern metal industry without it.
